AnySpyware.com Newsletter - Issue 2 November 2005 SONY ROOTKIT! DRM GONE MAD. So much has happened in the story of a rootkit used in XCP copy protection. Sony has withdrawn many CD's, but loads are still out there, ready to load a rootkit onto a PC. A badly coded rootkit which allows other malware to come along and be hidden from scanners, hidden from the user. It could be worse.. but not much. I've put a link to EFF online, at www.anyspyware.com/articles.html check out SONY BEING SUED. This gives some latest info and good links. For now, this is all about the Sony rootkit and back to real rootkits and other nasties. I feel sorry for those who buy CD's with this on it, go home, and don't read security forums, dont have friends who tell them EXACTLY what is going on and how to deal with it. That's the big problem facing Sony in a court, hurt to so many innocent users. There are documented cases from August where users have had a crash because of Aries.sys, and formatted their PC. On a lighter note, I had a chance to try Windows VISTA Beta 2, it is coming along very nicely. We should all look forward to it being completed, and hope the TESTERS are thorough and do find as many bugs as possible NOW. More news soon! P.S - the site needs feedback ! feedback@anyspyware.com Thanks! ------ Gavin Coe AnySpyware.com owner ------
